Why is Teuila the national flower of Samoa?

Without a doubt, the Teuila (te-oo-wee-lah). As Betsy stated, in English it’s called Red Ginger. I’ve never used it’s English name since I’ve only known it as Teuila.

Is its significance in Samoan culture?

Its color is it’s most significant aspect. The teuila is an incredibly vibrant red flower.

Red is the most traditional color in Samoa and has some very important symbolism in Samoan culture, which is why it is one of our national colors (probably the most important one). It is associated with the sun and fire, important sources of life and power.

Teuila flowers can vary from lighter shades of pink to bold red shades.

Because of their waxy exterior, teuila petals are great for ula (“necklace” worn around the neck or resting on shoulders). They hold up very well under the heat compared to more delicate flowers like pua (frangipani).

Pink is recognized as another shade of red and it isn't uncommon to find men wearing pink incorporated into traditional clothing.

For as long as I can remember, the teuila has been part of Samoa’s national identity. There is even an annual festival in honor of the flower; the Teuila Festival is held every year around late August or early September.
