The first person ever elected to Congress who was born into a monarchy, he later rose to the position of representative for the Territory of Hawaii in the US Congress.

He is renowned today not for his royal ancestry but rather for his commitment to reform in modern Hawaii. He was well-known for his involvement in the local community, his appointment of native Hawaiians to public office, and his pivotal role in advancing the Hawaii Statehood Act.

Kuhio passed away on January 7, 1922. Numerous streets, beaches, structures, and schools carry his name as a tribute to him.
